It’s been quite a few years since I’ve challenged myself with a long road ride. Being primarily a track cyclist I spend most of my time riding in circles. And while I do enjoy being on the velodrome, the lure of Cairns to Karumba has always been simmering on the back burner.
I’ve come close to making the commitment before: whimsical thoughts after a few beers and encouragement from friends, but each time finding an excuse to keep the bike in the rack.
Anyway I’ve finally signed up and I’m looking forward to the wide open road of the Gulf Savannah as opposed to the confines of Smith Park Cycledrome in Manunda.
Just as importantly, it will also be the camaraderie and the cause in helping bush kids that delivers satisfaction and a sense of achievement.
There is no better place to form new bonds and friendships that on two wheels in the outback!
